Thermavein / Veinaway

ThermaVein® (formerly Veinaway) is recognised as the leader in the removal of facial thread veins/spider veins on the face and red veins on the legs, small skin tags (around the eyes), cherry angiomas, milia, and Warts. The highly accurate precision and bursts of high energy cause the supply vessels of the lesions to die off immediately when touched.

The process to remove clusters of facial thread veins, red leg veins, tags, warts, and milia is known as thermocoagulation. Sharp, high-frequency bursts of energy are passed into the lesion or red vein vessel, causing the blood supply within that lesion or red vein to immediately stop. Your body will naturally remove the internal debris that has died off as part of the healing process.

VeinAway for blood spots and small veins on nose and face

What can I expect during my appointment?

During your initial enquiry to the Skin Revision clinic in Beaconsfield, you will be able to show us the nature of your skin concern. If we believe the issue to be either thread veins, milia, blood spots, small skin tags (especially around the eyes), or a wart, then it is likely you will be offered Thermavein. Your initial appointment will be booked for 30-45 minutes to allow us to assess and treat the skin lesion.

What is Thermavein?

Thermavein® is medical grade and has both CE and FDA approval.
It is a very low-risk and effective treatment for unsightly thread/spider veins and other conditions such as milia, skin tags, warts, and cherry angiomas/blood spots.
A single-use probe, the size of a human hair, is placed onto the surface of the skin, above the lesion, and gentle pressure is applied. Thermavein then delivers a pinpoint, accurate microburst of energy onto the vein or lesion to seal it

How does Thermocoagulation work on Thread Veins?

Thermocoagulation works by sealing the vein. This will lead to the permanent destruction of the tiny, thin-walled veins. Heat is applied using microwave energy at the end of a minuscule needle, which just pricks the very surface of the skin that covers the vein. The vein itself is not punctured. The vein disappears immediately, and the waste disappears naturally through the lymphatic system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Thermavein safe?

Thermavein (formerly Veinaway) uses intense short bursts of heat energy that seal the veins by killing off the blood supply to the vein, mole, skin tag, milia, or blood spot. It does not use electrocoagulation or IPL, and therefore it does not carry the same risk of scarring and burns. There are no incisions, chemicals, or injections. The low current given means that the Thermavein treatment is very safe for our patients.

How long does a treatment take?

It is likely that a consultation is not required, as a free assessment can be made over the phone and with photos. Treatment time can range from just 10 seconds to 15 minutes. This will depend on the complexity of the treatment and the number of skin-type issues. Time to fill out the necessary consultation and consent forms will be built into your overall appointment time.

How many Thermavein treatments will I need?

Normally only one treatment is required for skin treatments such as milia (small white bumps under eyes and cheeks), red blood spots, and small skin tags. Thread veins can sometimes cover a larger area, and as such, as many as three treatments may be necessary. However, it is not uncommon for just one treatment to be needed for thread veins/spider veins around the nose, cheeks, chin, and eyelids. Moles and Skin Tags—It is likely that between 2 and 3 treatments would be necessary for the larger or older lesions.

What skin issues can a Thermavein procedure treat?

  • Treatment for facial thread veins, small red veins on the nose, small red veins on the cheeks, small veins on the chin, small red veins on the eyelids, and broken capillaries.
  • Treatment for spider veins on the nose, chin, cheeks and eyelids,
  • Treatment for red veins on legs.
  • Treatment for Telangiectasia.
  • Treatment for Milia. Milia are small, white bumps that most commonly appear around the eyes and on the cheeks.
  • Treatment for small skin tags. Larger tags are treated with CryoPen (Cryotherapy)
  • Treatment for Campbell-de-Morgan spots.
  • Treatment for Cherry Angiomas. Treatment for Blood Spots (often small red spots found anywhere on the face and body).

Is it suitable for all skin types and skin colour?

Thermavein can be used for all skin colours, and skin tones. Thermavein can be used on darker and lighter skin tones and includes sensitive skin. Your assessment over the phone and in the clinic will give you a full understanding of the expected results for your skin type and skin condition.

What aftercare is advised?

The area that has been treated will be red and feel warm to the touch immediately after treatment, as it is an inflammatory response and will usually calm down within the first few days. The treated skin may also start to feel dry and develop a few tiny micro scabs. In the days following treatment, some larger vessels may appear visible, which is normal. The vessels will gradually fade and be broken down by the body.

For the first 48 hours following treatment:

  • Avoid wearing makeup (can be worn after 24 hours if necessary)
  • Wash the treated area gently, do not scrub or rub the area
  • Do not stretch the skin
  • Avoid alcohol and spicy food if you are prone to flushed skin
  • Avoid excessive exercise or any activities which cause sweating or dilation of the capillaries
  • Apply aloe vera gel to the area to help soothe irritated skin

After healing:

  • Use a good broad spectrum SPF 30 or above to protect the skin. We would recommend Heliocare
  • Avoid using sunbeds
  • Avoid harsh cleansing, steaming or exfoliation of the skin for the first week
  • Use gentle products
  • Use tepid water on the face, and when showering and having a bath, use water on a moderate temperature

What can I expect with a Thermavein treatment?

During treatment, a slight tingling sensation and possible mild discomfort can be felt. A local anesthetic cream may be applied. After your treatment, the treated area may feel a little warm and look a little red. In most cases redness will calm down within a day or so, depending on skin type. The area treated may also become a little dry or even scab for a few days. This depends on the skin issue you would like resolved. It is not common for this to happen.

Thread veins do gradually fade away from the skin surface from the first minute to 3 days after. A small skin tag may take up to 14 days to fall off.

Does Thermavein hurt and is anaesthetic needed?

There is minimal discomfort, and normally no anesthetic is needed. However, on some more sensitive areas that are treated, for example, around the eyes for thread veins or moles, or on the scalp for moles, anesthetic is more often required.

Any mild heat discomfort lasts for just around 5 seconds, after which the skin cools immediately and you are able to leave the clinic.

Due to the slight discomfort when treating younger children for just blood spots, we will only treat individuals from the age of 10 years old.

How many Thermavein treatments may be needed?

When treating milia and tiny red blood spots/cherry Angioma / Campbell de Morgan, it is likely that only one treatment would be required. For a cluster of thread veins, moles, or larger/stubborn skin tags, 2-3 treatments may be necessary. However, during your free skin assessment, it will be determined how many treatments could be required, as well as the expected cost for the desired results.
