Microneedling aftercare and skin recovery

Microneedling Aftercare: What to Do in the 72 Hours After

Microneedling done well delivers real change to the skin. Microneedling looked after well in the following days delivers more of that change with less risk along the way. The seventy two hours after a session are where you do most of the work to protect what’s just been done.

This is the aftercare guide we give to clients after every microneedling session at the clinic. Save it, screenshot it, do whatever helps. It’s not complicated, but the details matter, and the difference between following it carefully and winging it can mean the difference between a smooth recovery and an avoidable problem.

The first 24 hours

For the first twenty four hours, the priority is to let the skin settle without provoking it. You’ll likely have some redness, a sensation similar to mild sunburn, and possibly a feeling of tightness. This is normal and expected.

Things to avoid in the first twenty four hours:

  • Makeup, including tinted moisturisers and primers
  • Hot showers, saunas, steam rooms and hot baths
  • Exercise that makes you sweat
  • Direct sun exposure
  • Alcohol, which dehydrates the skin
  • Active skincare ingredients (retinols, acids, vitamin C)
  • Touching or rubbing the face
  • Sleeping face down where possible

If we’ve provided a specific post treatment serum or mask, use it as directed. Otherwise, leave the skin clean and bare for the first night.

Cleansing in the early window

From day two onwards, gentle cleansing returns. Use lukewarm water rather than hot. Use a very gentle, fragrance free cleanser that doesn’t contain any actives. Pat dry with a soft towel rather than rubbing. Apply your prescribed post treatment moisturiser straight away while the skin is still slightly damp.

Avoid anything you’d normally consider an ‘active’ product for at least three days, and longer if we’ve advised it. That includes vitamin C, retinols, exfoliating acids of any strength, and even some vitamin A derivatives. Your skin is in repair mode and doesn’t need stimulation. It needs support.

Products that calm and support

The products that work hardest in the first seventy two hours are the ones that calm inflammation, support barrier function, and lock in hydration. We’ll typically prescribe or recommend:

  • A gentle, fragrance free cleanser
  • A barrier supporting moisturiser, often with ceramides or peptides
  • A specific post treatment recovery serum where appropriate
  • Daily mineral SPF (more on this below)

What you don’t need is your usual routine if it includes anything active. Step away from the multi serum stack for a few days and let the skin do its work.

Sun protection and why it’s non negotiable

The single most important thing you can do in the days and weeks after microneedling is wear daily broad spectrum SPF. The freshly treated skin is more vulnerable to UV damage, more prone to pigmentation, and easily set back by sun exposure that wouldn’t normally cause a problem.

We’d recommend a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide and ideally a tinted iron oxide formula to also protect against visible light. Apply it generously in the morning from day two onwards, and reapply through the day. Even on overcast British days. Yes, even then.

If you have a beach holiday booked within four weeks of your treatment, it’s worth rethinking the timing of your microneedling session. The combination is rarely worth the risk to results.

When to call us

Some level of redness, mild swelling, tightness and pinpoint dryness is entirely normal. By day three or four, the skin usually starts to look smoother and brighter than before.

Reasons to give us a call:

  • Spreading redness or swelling that’s getting worse rather than better
  • Significant pain rather than tenderness
  • Pus, weeping or any sign of infection
  • A rash or hives suggesting a product reaction
  • Anything unusual you’re worried about

We’d much rather you call and check than worry quietly at home. Take a photo, ring the clinic, and we’ll talk it through with you. Most concerns turn out to be normal aspects of healing, but if something needs attention, sooner is always better than later.

Beyond the first 72 hours

After the initial recovery window, you can usually return to your normal routine gradually. Active ingredients can come back, but introduce them one at a time over the following week so you can tell if anything is causing a reaction. Sun protection remains essential for several weeks.

Most clients see the best results from a single microneedling session at around four to six weeks, as the collagen building work runs its course. By then you’re well into the gap before your next session, where the cycle continues.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wash my face after microneedling?

For the first twenty four hours, leave the skin bare or use only the post treatment products we’ve provided. From day two, gentle cleansing with lukewarm water and a very mild fragrance free cleanser is fine. Pat dry rather than rubbing, and apply your prescribed moisturiser straight after.

When can I wear makeup again?

Avoid all makeup for the first twenty four hours, including tinted moisturisers and primers. From day two onwards, mineral based makeup is generally safe, but heavy or oil based products are best avoided for at least seventy two hours. Use clean brushes and avoid sharing makeup with anyone else.

What about exercise and sweating?

Avoid exercise that makes you sweat for the first twenty four hours, and avoid saunas, steam rooms and hot yoga for at least seventy two hours. Sweat introduces salt and bacteria onto compromised skin, and heat can prolong redness and inflammation. Gentle walks are fine from day one if you don’t break a sweat.
