Milia

Milia – Beaconsfield

Milia are small pearly-white bumps of skin that often appear in clusters just under the surface of the skin. Often called milk spots, milia are most commonly found around the sides and bottom of the eyes. They are small cysts containing keratin. Milia are harmless but may cause embarrassment or be slightly uncomfortable.

We regularly use VeinAway thermocoagulation or CryoPen for safe, pin-point accuracy, to permanently remove each Milia with very little discomfort. Depending on the amount of Milia, the treatments are generally short with no significant downtime. You can return to a normal lifestyle post-treatment with minimum redness and very little sensitivity.

    • A small scab may appear, although this is unusual.
    • No squeezing of area. This risks scarring.
    • You can wash or cleanse the treated area using perfume-free soap.

    • Only apply creams if absolutely necessary. Make sure they are not rich and skin-clogging.
    • Smooth blemish free skin after a week or so.

What homecare/skincare should be used to treat Milia?

Milia should be treated in the clinic in order to remove the little white bumps permanently and safely. Sometimes at home, it may be possible to get rid of small Milia with some very gentle exfoliation. Do not scrub as these may lead to small red veins appearing (thread veins). Place a hot clean wet cloth on your skin for a few minutes. Apply a recommended exfoliator and gently rub in a circular motion, 3 times a week. This may disturb the skin, open the pores and let the dead cells out. As mentioned, the best way to treat and remove Milia safely is in-clinic.

Who can get Milia?

Milia affects both males and females equally, from newborns through to more mature adults and older age. Milia in babies generally, clears up on its own within a few weeks with no treatment. Adult Milia can disappear on its own but often requires treatment..

It is often seen on individuals with dry or acidic skin, Every day your skin exfoliates itself. However, if your skin cannot exfoliate / shed the dead cells, they can get stuck under the skin and cause Milia or Blackheads.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Milia?

Milia are small white or sometimes yellow cysts, made from Keratin.
They are like tiny cysts. They are formed from debris such as sebum (the natural oil we produce to lubricate our skin).
This debris and dead skin cells can get trapped under the keratin and Milia can be formed.
They can also form purely through genetics.
People who have more oil in their skin can be more prone to Milia also, due to the over production of sebum.

What is the Keratin that forms Milia

Keratin is a protein. This protein sits on the skin. But when bacteria is trapped beneath the skin, the Milia cysts or blackheads are formed.

Can Milia go away on their own, or do they require professional treatment?

In some cases, milia may resolve spontaneously over time. However, persistent milia often requires professional treatment from a skin expert or skin specialist such as Skin Revision, for the most effective removal.

Does my makeup and skin creams that I use, cause Milia?

Milia can be caused by the continual use of thick and heavy skin creams.
It is likely that Milia is caused by skin care products on the face. Products that are heavy in oil or are comedogenic (pore-clogging) are generally the most to blame as they fill out the skin’s pores and so the dead cells cannot exfoliate. This can not only lead to Milia but also blackheads and acne.

How much does a Milia treatment cost?

The cost is currently from just £85
However, during your free Milia assessment over the phone or in-person, the Skin Revisionist will discuss with you the amount of treatments needed and the expected overall cost.
